I love taking photos of sunrise

I love taking photos of the sunrise. The idea of a new dawn and a fresh start each day is much like my view on business. Each day provides a unique set of challenges and opportunities. We need to embrace all of those for what they are – opportunities to grow.I guess that the title of this blog raises some other questions. Such as why I am awake and out and about at that time of the morning. I have always been a morning person, way back at school I often woke up at 4.30 or 5 am to study. I have particular memories of walking around the garden at dawn at my parent house and reciting history essays that I was learning. This altogether strange behaviour probably has something to do with my present state of mind.I often refer to myself as a cyclist. This is somewhat of an overstatement. I enjoy cycling, have a reasonably good light weight “racing bike” and at the peak of my cycling I would probably cover 200-250km a week. I should probably say that I enjoy cycling rather than stating that I am a cyclist. Perth in Western Australia has an amazing network of car free pathways for cyclists and pedestrians. This network of pathways is estimated at greater than 800k. This allows for a relatively safe environment to cycle. As someone who goes cycling in the early morning, I am often treated to many spectacular sunrises and I often pull over on the bike in order to try and capture the moment. I probably do more than 50% of my riding on my own and a typical early morning ride would be around 45-60km.Not only do I enjoy the views, but I enjoy the solitude and the ability to talk to myself and think.I once read a saying that went along the lines of “ Don’t you hate it when the voices in your head have an argument and leave you out”. This is my time think about new ideas and actions, a time to reflect and also to do nothing else but be present. And just like the fact that each dawn is different, I believe that in business and life as managers we have to be present in all our different situations.I find that after an early morning ride or run, I am energised for the day ahead. We need to engage and face each day with that energy and vigour.Every day that the sun rises (at least for our lifetimes and beyond) it rises with the same energy and illuminates the world with that energy. This blog is about my insights into business and life – the anecdotes are taken from experiences and observation. The messages and conclusions, although somewhat generic will I hope inspire and guide you in business, life and business life.
