Are you Intense?

I often joke that I have the attention span of a goldfish.

Where did that come from? My natural work pattern is a soundbite type where I'm driven by short bursts of high energy to complete short tasks. And having been in finance for the last 21 years, there are often times where I need to change my behavior to suit the tasks that I have to complete.

Intense or intensity is the second of the excellence FIELD’s.

In order to be excellent, we need to train ourselves to have periods of intense work or intense concentration. For many, including me, it's not a natural state to be in. I do get hyper focused on certain tasks and the perfectionism of those tasks.

The age old question of whether multi-tasking is possible or whether this is actually a sequential series of short tasks. I don’t know the answer, but I believe it is the latter.

A lot of the work I do with my clients and their teams is understanding the behavioral styles of the team members and the character traits of those behavior styles.

But when talking to those who are leaders or aspiring to be leaders we often refer to them as needing to have chameleon behaviour.

They need to suppress their natural behaviour and learn how to communicate in ways that get to the core of the various behavioral styles.

So why went into talking about intensity do I raise the topic of behavioral styles? Well, my natural behavior is to be people oriented, fun oriented, what I call in my world a dominant yellow behavior. In that same color world, the blue behavioral style which is an opposite to the yellow is about diligence, detail and focus. Over the years I've trained myself to flip between the yellow behavioral style my dominance, and the blue behavioral style, my least dominant.

But whilst in the blue behavioral state. I'm hyper focused. I am absolutely working with intensity on a task that requires undivided attention and undivided focus. And I would like to believe that this is a skill we can all cultivate.  It is a skill that once you have cultivated It allows you to become more chameleon like in your own behavior and allows you to move on this journey to excellence through the excellence FIELDs.

As you go on your journey to excellence and achieving your excellence FIELD, remember to work on creating intensity in your life that will allow you to be super productive and show up as the best version of yourself which is excellent.
