Purpose - do you shout it from the rooftops?

Purpose - do you shout it from the rooftops, or just allow the team to internalise it and live up to the purpose?

That may sound quite simplistic.

Why would an organisation take the time and effort to find the "perfect" purpose, and then not go out and tell the world?

Finding purpose

In 2017 one of the largest Australian companies came out with the statement of purpose that read

"We back the bold who move Australia forward.”

The CEO outlined background and thinking on this vision to commentator Richard Gluyas in The Weekend Australian. "Our intention was - and … still is - not to talk about it outside because we need to own this ourselves and let it seep into the organisation, which will probably take another 18 months,"

The CEO continued to say that one of the catalysts for the statement of purpose was to try and counter mistrust that was developing amongst consumers, and that this statement would define the organisation for a long time.

He concluded with "We think this is a 50-year statement that won't change"

So my questions are multiple -

Does your organization have a long term purpose?

Do you have a long term purpose that is greater than the organisation itself?

Do you - or should you - shout your purpose or values from the rooftops?
